Year 4 Running Training
Lesson: Physical education
Class: Year 4 Year: 2025 - 2026
Year 4 have started their athletics topic with such enthusiasm and determination. We started with a recap of running techniques and discussed the different running races from the Olympics.
We started with the 100m sprint. After watching a clip of Louie Hinchliffe, as he stunned Britain’s best to secure a fairytale Olympic 100m qualification at the UK Athletics Championships, the children focused on starting positions, facing forwards, strides, and using their arms. They certainly demonstrated great sprinting style.
In the next lesson we again recapped effective running tips and introduced the hurdles. This was to help the children investigate how to change their stride pattern whilst sprinting. The children demonstrated last week’s learning and could alter their stride pattern between hurdles.
Lesson 3 moved to long distance running. Again, we recapped previous lessons and watched a clip showing a local runner, Keeley Hodgkinson, winning the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The children noticed the change in starting position but the same techniques of facing forwards, using arms and trying the use longer strides until the sprint for the finish line.
Such great athleticism so far and the comments from the children demonstrate their ambition and kindness. "I can't believe I made it all the way without stopping!" Millie H. "Please can we run again!" Harry H. "Lola is so fast!" lots of Y4 children.
