Fieldwork Study – Formby Beach – What impact do humans have on the coastline?

Today Year 2 visited Formby Beach as part of a field work study. Year 2 kicked off the day by investigating the Strandline  (a mark left by the high tide or a line of seaweed and other debris washed onto the beach by the tide) they collected data and organised into sorting hoops; man made and natural objects. We will conclude this study back in the classroom.

The children displayed excellent map skills by creating a map of Formby Beach creating symbols for the Human and Physical Features.

Following this, the children then set off to explore other geological features of the coast. They rolled down sand dunes while learning how they are formed; found a man-made lake and observed the effects of global warming – last year the lake was dried up (drought like conditions) now it was flooded, this is an example of extreme weather.

The children also identified grassy plains and walked though evergreen forests made up of Pine Trees - some even brought home pine cones to remember the day.
