Egyptian Workshop

Lesson: History

Class: Year 3 Year: 2022 - 2023

The children had a visitor from the local community who came into school to share his interest and knowledge about the Ancient Egyptians.  John Johnson spent the whole morning with the children talking to them about the Ancient Egyptians, the children had lots of questions to ask; they asked him about how the Ancient Egyptians recorded their lives and information.   Mr Johnson explained that this was called Hieroglyphics.  The children were fascinated by the picture writing that he showed them. He then taught them how to read Hieroglyphics and the children tried to interpret some of the writing.

He also discussed the different Gods the Ancient Egyptians worshipped. They discussed the makeup that the Ancient Egyptian men and women wore and what archeologists think why they wore the makeup.

The children were very inquisitive, the children talked about what jobs the Ancient Egyptians would have had and how they would have survived.

Mr John Johnson was very knowledgeable and shared with the children what he knew.  They talked about how the Egyptians were skilled workers and how they always tried their very best thinking of different inventions, how they farmed the land and used the River Nile.  They looked at where Ancient Egypt was located and Mr Johnson discussed with the children the importance of the River Nile and how it would flood and change the landscape.  He showed them the modes of transport, that was used in Ancient Egyptian times and can still be used today. He then talked about where the ancient Egyptians settled and what different jobs they would do. Farm the land, sell, trade, architects, builders, cooks, transport and linked this back to modern day living today.

Then at the end Mr John Johnson showed the children some artefacts and they all looked at these, it was a very interesting and fasinating.
