Digestive System!

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 5 Year: 2016 - 2017

Today in science we looked at how food travels through the human body. We constructed a human digestive system using everyday materials to represent the main parts of the digestive system. We followed the journey that a banana (moist food) and a biscuit (dry food) would take as they travel through the body. We started at the mouth were we chopped and chewed the biscuit together; adding water to represent the saliva. We pushed the food through a funnel and down in to a large plastic bag; this was to represent the food being swallowed, travelling down the oesophagus and in to the stomach. Once in the stomach we added some blue food dye and crushed the food with our hands; which showed how our stomach acid breaks food down. We then used tights to signify how the small and large intestines work. The small intestine absorbs the nutrients and then the large intestine absorbs any water to solidfy the leftover substance. Finally a hole is cut in the bottom of the tights and the solid substance comes out at the end; thus completing the journey of food through our body.
