Special Day at Garswood

On Friday 19th June recently elected MP Conor McGinn visited Garswood Primary to meet the children and fulfil his promise to a child. One of the Y6 pupils requested – if he were to get elected – would he visit the school? Conor was keen to ensure he followed through on this agreement.

Friday was a special day for Garswood Primary. They were undertaking a sponsored event on Friday with children in Nursery and Reception having a ‘Wild Rumpus’ in the spirit of the book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. This follows a sponsored swim event completed by the Y6 children earlier this month.

All  monies raised are going to fund a very special cause for the school. On 30th  March 2015, Zac Barston, a year 6 pupil at the school, died of a glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive brain tumour. Zac remained good humoured, determined and strong – a true inspiration throughout his illness – even continuing to swim competitively throughout his illness.  Zac loved animals, ‘critters’ he would call them and he particularly loved sloths. ‘The Wild Rumpus’ he would have loved.

The school have been raising money to work with Cool Canvas and create a beautiful outdoor space in the school known as Zac’s garden, with a large wooden sculpture of a sloth standing proud in this special space - a tribute to such a special child who will always be part of the Garswood family. Children can go to the garden to reflect, read or just have some quiet time.

The school are determined to raise the profile of this disease which into which research is limited. They are committed to an annual event to contribute towards the  ‘Children’s Brain Tumour Research Network’ based at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. The charity was set up following Zac’s death.
