Welcome to the Wonderful World of Year 5 at Garswood Primary!

The leap into Year 5 is a thrilling milestone—a true "bridge to independence." As our pupils transition into the upper juniors, we embark on a strategic mission to transform them from guided learners into self-reliant, curious explorers. This journey depends on a powerful partnership between teacher, pupil, and parent.

Together, we will foster the academic ambition and personal confidence your child needs to conquer Year 5 and soar into Year 6.

A successful year is rooted in strong relationships. Our Year 5 team is dedicated to creating an energetic, supportive atmosphere where every child is inspired to reach their full potential.

Class Teacher: Mrs. A. Campbell - High energy, adventurous, and ambitious! You’ll often hear stories about Mrs. Campbell's dog Milo, our long walks together. She cherishes every moment spent with her family, and brings that same sense of care and community into the Year 5 classroom.

The Year 5 Curriculum Journey

Year 5 is a pivotal year where curiosity meets rigour.

We aim to broaden your child’s horizons, linking their learning to the wider world and fostering a global perspective.

English: The Power of the Narrative

Our English curriculum is built around masterpieces that challenge the imagination.

  • Main Texts: We dive deep into the mystery of The Hound of the Baskervilles and the epic scale of King Kong.

  • A Breadth of Reading: We explore diverse voices through texts like Wonder by R.J. Palacio, the haunting beauty of The Promise, and the thought-provoking Pansy Boy.

  • Word Mastery: We move beyond simple spelling to focus on morphology and etymology. By investigating word roots, prefixes, and suffixes, children develop a sophisticated vocabulary that unlocks complex texts.

Maths: The Path to Mastery

We follow a structured, logical progression to build unwavering mathematical confidence:

  • The Foundation: Establishing total fluency in Place Value (up to 1 million!) and Addition and Subtraction.

  • The Development: Mastering Multiplication, Division, and Fractions.

  • Specialised Skills: Tackling Decimals, Percentages, Geometry (shape, position, and direction), Statistics, and Measure.

Expectations, Independence, and Standards

As leaders of the upper juniors, we set the bar high to foster a culture of pride. We expect our pupils to be the architects of their own success.

  • Listening to Instructions: Being ready to learn the very first time an instruction is shared.

  • Engaging in Lessons: We don't just "do" lessons; we dive into them with active participation.

  • Presentation Excellence: We take immense pride in our work. This means joined handwriting throughout and using a ruler for underlining dates and titles.

The Secret to Success:

"Sticky Knowledge"

In Year 5, we talk about "Sticky Knowledge"—the essential facts we want to stay in your child’s brain forever. We achieve this by constantly revisiting information throughout the term.

This repetition ensures that learning isn't just "for the test," but becomes a permanent part of their understanding.

Celebrating Success: Rewards and Positive Vibes

Garswood is a community built on positive reinforcement. We believe that celebrating the "wonderful" nature of our pupils is the most effective way to inspire excellence.

The Menu of Rewards

  • House Points: Awarded for effort and achievement. Each week, the top scorer in the class claims a special prize!

  • 📜 Merit Award: A prestigious weekly honour for a pupil demonstrating exceptional attitude and hard work.

  • ❤️ Kindness Award: Perhaps our most important award, celebrating those who show genuine care for their peers.

While a behaviour policy exists to provide reminders and boundaries (which may include missing part of a break time), our focus remains firmly on the positive vibes that make our class a family.
