Welcome to the Adventure: Your Guide to Year 4 at Garswood Primary School
Welcome to an incredible new chapter! Year 4 is a truly magical time at Garswood Primary School. This is the year our children begin their exciting transition into the "Upper Juniors," where we focus on building the confidence, resilience, and curiosity they need for a seamless journey into Year 5 and beyond.
Our Year 4 staff team is strategically positioned to guide this transition, encouraging every child to strive for excellence—both as brave, independent explorers and as kind, vital members of our school community.
Our dedicated team works collaboratively to ensure your child feels nurtured and cheered on every step of the way.

Having a Senior Leader and SENCO like Mrs Myatt directly in the classroom provides a unique strategic advantage for our pupils. As children move into the Upper Juniors, the curriculum demands become more complex; Mrs Myatt’s expertise ensures that these transitions are handled with precision. This leadership means that "every individual talent" is identified and nurtured, allowing us to deliver a bespoke, inclusive education where every child shines.

After that click on the gallery link to witness how we recorded and celebrated these events and relive some happy Garswood memories. We also have the Garswood on Video page for some more active memories such as assemblies and events that have occured over the years.

We will not upload any images of your child without your permission. When your child starts their Garswood journey all parents and guardians are asked for signed permission for the various platforms and this permission can be withdrawn at any time.

The Year 4 classroom is a "safe and caring" hub of exploration. We have designed a structured environment that empowers children to take risks in their learning, fostering the independence they will need as they grow into young leaders.
All Different, All Welcome At the core of "The Garswood Way" is our "No Outsiders" vision. By living out the tagline "All different, All welcome," we promote community cohesion and prepare our children to be empathetic "global citizens." In Year 4, this means celebrating our unique backgrounds and learning to value every voice in our classroom.
Our Strategic Learning Zones:
The Maths Area: A vibrant, independent space where children can access resources to solve puzzles and master new concepts.
Class Library: A cosy sanctuary designed to ignite a lifelong passion for reading and research.
The Computing Suite & In-Class Tech: We use technology daily to enhance our skills. Beyond using "Reading Plus" and "Timestables.co.uk,"
This inclusive, tech-rich environment provides the perfect foundation for the high academic standards we strive for in our daily work. Our children dive into the digital world by debugging algorithms, mastering data handling, and learning how to stay safe through an age-appropriate understanding of cyber-bullying.
In Year 4, we shift gears to help our students become truly independent learners. We focus on "sticky knowledge"—essential facts and skills that we revisit constantly so they "stick" in the long-term memory, allowing children to build confidently upon their Year 3 foundations.
English Curriculum:
English: Inspiring Young Writers We lose ourselves in high-quality core texts, including the enchanting I Believe in Unicorns and the timeless The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. By using the "Literacy Counts" spelling programme, we intentionally reduce "cognitive overload."
By making spelling and grammar patterns clear and repetitive, we free up your child's creative energy, allowing them to focus entirely on writing their own brilliant adventures.
Maths: The Road to Fluency
Using the White Rose Maths framework, our roadmap covers Place Value, Fractions, Decimals, and Reasoning. A major milestone this year is the Multiplication Check in June 2025. Our goal is for every child to be fluent in all tables by the end of the year, providing them with the "maths muscles" they need for the future.
💡 Top Tips for Success: KIRFs
The secret to mastering Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) is "little and often."
Focus Areas: This year, we prioritise the 6, 9, and 11 times tables.
Daily Practice: Try reciting tables on the walk to school or during a car journey.
Fact Families: If they know 3 x 6 = 18, ask them if they can tell you the other three facts in that family!
While we work hard in English and Maths, the real magic of Year 4 is how these skills come to life through our exciting weekly adventures across the wider curriculum.
A Week in the Life: Beyond the Basics
A broad and balanced curriculum is essential for developing well-rounded, happy children. From the discipline of learning an instrument to the wonder of history, our weekly schedule is packed with variety.
Your Weekly Snapshot:
Music: Beautiful Clarinet lessons with Miss Lewis.
Modern Foreign Languages: We explore the world through French.
Physical Education: PE takes place twice weekly. Please ensure children come to school wearing their PE kits on PE days.
Creative Projects: Highlights include our delicious "Bake Off" DT project and exploring the legends of Ancient Greece.
The Homework & Assessment Routine:
Weekly Tests: To help us identify exactly how to support your child, we have weekly Spelling, Multiplication, and Arithmetic tests. Revision at home is a wonderful way to help them feel prepared and confident!
Friday Homework: Tasks are set every Friday via Spellings and Atom Learning.
Daily Reading: We change reading books weekly, but please ensure your child has their book in school every day so we can enjoy reading together.
The Garswood Standards
Handwriting: All children are expected to use beautiful, joined handwriting.
Pride in Work: Dates and titles must be neatly underlined.
Uniform Policy: To keep our focus on learning, please remember: no trainers and no earrings. For children with long hair, please stick to small, simple bobbles to keep hair tied back safely.
We are here to support you in every aspect of school life, as we believe the strongest bridge to success is the one built between home and school.

Appointments: If you ever have a question, please arrange an appointment through the school office so we can give you our full attention.
Family Support: Mrs Evans, our Family Support Worker, is always available to assist families with extra guidance.
