Welcome to the Wonderful World of Year 2 at Garswood Primary!
At Garswood Primary and Nursery School, we believe that the journey through Year 2 is a beautiful "partnership for happiness." The relationship between our dedicated staff, our young learners, and you, the parents, is the foundation of everything we achieve. We prioritised creating a warm, safe atmosphere where children feel brave enough to challenge themselves, ensuring their final year in Key Stage 1 is a joyful springboard into their future education.
Miss. R. Jenkinson
We believe that children flourish when they are surrounded by familiar, supportive faces who truly recognise their potential. Our team works hand-in-hand to ensure every child feels seen and valued.
🏷️ Miss Jenkinson - Miss Jenkinson leads our classroom adventures on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
🏷️ Mrs Rollason - The wonderful Mrs Rollason brings her expertise to the class every Tuesday.
🏷️ Mrs Livesley, Miss Ryan & Miss Myatt- Our fantastic teaching assistants provide nurture and tailored support throughout the entire week. Miss Myatt will be there to support at lunchtimes.

We will not upload any images of your child without your permission. When your child starts their Garswood journey all parents and guardians are asked for signed permission for the various platforms and this permission can be withdrawn at any time.
The Year 2 Curriculum
Year 2 is a strategically vital bridge. We guide our adventurers from the foundational world of phonics into the exciting realm of independent inquiry. Our mission is to ignite a lifelong "love of learning" by giving children the tools to take ownership of their own progress.
To ensure that new knowledge moves from the short-term memory and "sticks" in the long-term memory, we utilise daily "recall" sessions and high-quality resources:
Magic Maths: We use White Rose "1-Minute Maths" and "Mastering Number" to sharpen those essential arithmetic skills and build confident mathematicians.
Superb Storytellers: Reading is the key that opens the door to the whole curriculum. We bring texts to life using artefacts, digital devices, and immersive classroom areas.
Spelling Superstars: We manage the transition from phonics into Year 2 spelling patterns using "Ready Steady Spell" and "Little Wandle" to help our pupils become fluent communicators.
Knowledge Recalled: By revisiting facts and skills every single day, we ensure our young learners build a solid, permanent foundation across all subjects.
The "Therapeutic Schools" Approach
At Garswood, we are proud of our Therapeutic Schools status. But "So what?"—why does this matter for your child? This approach recognises that there is always a feeling behind every difficult behaviour. Instead of using traditional punishments that can cause anxiety, we guide our children to understand their emotions.
This creates a calm, safe environment where children aren't afraid to make mistakes, which we know leads to much better learning outcomes.
This sense of adventure doesn't stop at the classroom door; it flourishes in the great outdoors!
Forest School and Physical Fun
We place immense value on outdoor education as a way to develop gross motor skills, teamwork, and resilience. Outdoor learning isn't just "play"—it is a strategic part of our curriculum that builds the "can-do" attitude our children need to succeed.
The Forest School Experience
Our Forest School sessions are a highlight of the Year 2 calendar. There's so much to learn from being outside, our children bond through team work, confidence, resilience and patience but also develop more practical outdoor skills, including:
Your child will experience:
Campfire Cooking: Learning fire safety and the joy of outdoor nourishment.
Den Building: Designing and building shelters through collaboration.
Life-Skill Knots: Master-knots for making frames and structures.
Tree Climbing: Safely challenging physical limits to build confidence.
Home Learning:
The "Team Garswood" philosophy is simple: when school and home work together, your child reaches their full potential. Your support at home is the "secret ingredient" to their success.
The Weekly Rhythm:
Friday to Wednesday: Homework is set every Friday in a dedicated book and should be returned by Wednesday.
The Reading Journey: We expect children to read at home at least 3 times per week.
Initially, children use Little Wandle books; however, once they complete the programme, they will transition to the Year 2 Fluency programme.
Please log all reading on the record sheets provided.
Quizzes: We hold spelling and arithmetic quizzes every Friday to celebrate the progress made throughout the week.
A Parent’s Guide to Year 2 SATs
At Garswood, we reframe the Standard Assessment Tests (SATs). These are not scary "pass or fail" exams; they are progress evaluations. They help us see how far your child has come and help us tailor our support for the next part of their journey.
Key Facts for Peace of Mind
Optional & Internal: KS1 SATs are now optional, but we use them as a helpful progress "snapshot." They are marked internally by the teachers who know and care for your child.
The Subjects: Evaluations cover Reading, Maths, and optional Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling (SPAG).
Not a Race: The tests are not strictly timed because we aren't assessing speed. Teachers have the authority to stop the test at any point if they feel it is appropriate for a child's wellbeing.
Scaled Scores: A score of 100 represents the "expected standard." Remember, this is only one part of the story; our own assessments throughout the year provide the full picture of your child’s brilliance.
[ ] Labelled Everything: All jumpers, fleeces, and PE kits must be clearly named.
[ ] Water Bottle: Full, named, and enough for the whole day.
[ ] Forest School Kit: Labelled and brought in a bag with a spare carrier bag for muddy boots.
[ ] Reading Bag: Brought to school every day for Friday swaps.
[ ] Healthy Snack: Fruit, veg, or crackers for morning break.
[ ] Jewellery Check: Standard watches only (strictly no smartwatches).
