Feeder Secondary Schools

The transition from primary to secondary school is a defining strategic milestone, marking the bridge between Garswood Primary and our possible feeder High Schools. (outlined opposite).

Below you will find information about the three nearest High Schools to Garswood and links to find out more about each one.

For Garswood families, this choice is not merely logistical; it is an investment in a child’s long-term trajectory.

The purpose of this website is to provide a balanced, evidence-based evaluation of the three prominent Secondary Schools in our local area:

  • Rainford High School (Garswood's official St Helens Secondary School),

  • Cansfield High School, and

  • Byrchall High School.

Rainford High Technology College:

Mr. I. Young (Principal) - WA11 8NY

Rainford High positions itself as an inclusive community where the "Everyone Matters" philosophy serves as a strategic framework for student resilience. By emphasising that every learner is integral to the school’s success, Rainford creates a supportive atmosphere within a large-scale academic setting.

Key Strategic Differentiators:

  • STEM and Academic Rigor: The school provides a significant competitive advantage for students pursuing the sciences and mathematics. Success in national competitions like the UK Maths Challenge and the Chemistry Olympiad, alongside the strong A-Level and BTEC outcomes of the 2026 results day, underscores their commitment to high academic standards.

  • Innovative Learning Focus: In a strategic response to national guidance regarding classroom focus, Rainford successfully implemented phone pouches. This is not merely a behavioral policy but a calculated tool to mitigate digital distractions and foster deep learning.

  • Character and Community: The breadth of extracurricular life—from the Duke of Edinburgh program to the Year 8 Sewing Club making dresses for the "Dress A Girl Around the World" charity—demonstrates a commitment to developing global citizens.

Although children attending Garswood will be guaranteed a place at Rainford High, because we sit on the borders of Wigan borough, some children often move onto a Wigan secondary school. We have strong links with Cansfield High Specialist Language College and Byrchall High School

Cansfield High School:

Mrs. Daniels (Headteacher) - WN4 9TP

Cansfield High School serves as a community hub in Ashton-in-Makerfield, successfully balancing high academic expectations with a demonstrably nurturing atmosphere. Their 2024 Ofsted feedback highlights a "caring and nurturing" environment, which is a critical prerequisite for the high attainment metrics they consistently produce.

Performance and Institutional Stability

Cansfield is celebrating 100 years of Education and Community during the 2025–2026 academic year. This longevity is reflected in their performance data, with the school currently ranking in the top 25% of all schools nationally for attendance. Furthermore, the "Lions of 2025" achieved a remarkable 99% attainment rate for 5+ GCSEs, illustrating a culture where high engagement leads to measurable success.

Specialised Facilities:

Cansfield’s infrastructure provides unique pathways for talent development:

  • Performance Curriculum: A modern, fully equipped theatre supports students with aspirations in the creative arts.

  • Athletic Tradition: The "outstanding sports facilities" facilitate historic traditions like the Jack Case Cup, fostering teamwork and school spirit.

Byrchall High School

Mr. P. Paul (Headteacher) - WN4 9PQ

Byrchall High School offers a unique heritage dating back to 1588. However, its historical prestige is now matched by its forward-looking infrastructure, making it a "high-achieving, caring community" that appeals to families seeking both stability and modernity.

The "Byrchall Experience"

  • State-of-the-Art Infrastructure: The transition into the "amazing new school building" provides a catalyst for modern pedagogical approaches, ensuring students have access to the latest educational technologies.

  • Barrier-Reduction Strategy: Byrchall’s transition program is an intentional social engineering tool. The Summer School—featuring archery, wilderness skills, and trips to Knowsley Safari Park—is designed to proactively reduce transition anxiety and build social bonds before September.

  • Parental Integration: The school recognises that transition affects the whole family. The "Cake & Catch Up" event, specifically scheduled for Wednesday 2nd September from 2:15 pm to 3:00 pm, provides a vital platform for parents to integrate into the school community.

Pre-Schools and Nurseries

In January 2015 Garswood Primary opened their very own Nursery, providing wrap around care and additional sessions.

However, we do retain strong links with other providers to ensure a smooth transition for children into school. The Reception staff will visit all preschool settings and nurseries beforehand to meet the children and to effectively transfer any information to support the child in settling into school and making progress.

Network

Garswood Primary is part of a very effective network of thirteen Primary Schools known as St Helens First Network. By working together it is a more cost effective way to get the best from resources, including CPD opportunities for our staff. The children also have shared events for instance our more able dancers from each school joined together with a specialist teacher to perform for parents. Children from every school took part.
