Master of the Craft:
Year 3 and Beyond
As our pupils enter the "End" phase of this primary journey, they move toward technical mastery.
Year 3 is a milestone year where prior knowledge of pulse and pitch is applied to physical instruments.
Students begin with the Recorder, mastering notes B, A, and G, before progressing to the Glockenspiel, where they learn a wider melodic range including F, G, A, B, and C.
This stage introduces the precise language of the professional musician. We move beyond "loud and quiet" to terms like unison, accompaniment, and timbre (pronounced 'tam-ber')—the unique "colour" of a sound that helps us tell a flute from a trumpet. Children now read formal notation, identifying the beat values of:
Minims (half notes, held for two beats)
Crotchets (quarter notes, held for one beat)
Quavers (eighth notes, representing half a beat)
Having found their rhythm, we challenge their worldview with diverse genres.
From the Jazz of Louis Armstrong and the Soul of Aretha Franklin to the Pow Wow singers Jen and Jermaine White Bull, our children learn that music is a community-building tool.
They begin to appreciate the philosophical depth of the subject, understanding the beautiful sentiment that "Nature is our first music."
