Year 3
Transitioning into the "Juniors" is a significant milestone in a child’s educational journey. At Garswood Primary and Nursery School, we recognise that this move from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 requires a carefully balanced environment—one that provides the security of a nurturing classroom while introducing the higher expectations of the junior years.
To facilitate this, we have assembled a consistent, multi-disciplinary staff team designed to provide secure support, ensuring every pupil feels confident as they step into this new chapter.

Our Year 3 team is composed of dedicated professionals who collaborate closely to oversee both the academic and pastoral needs of the children. This diverse structure ensures that every child receives personalised attention throughout their busy school week:

Growing into Independent Learners:
The transition into Key Stage 2 is marked by a strategic focus on independence and self-sufficiency. We aim to empower our students to become autonomous learners, a foundational step that prepares them for the upper juniors, high school, and beyond.
By encouraging children to take ownership of their learning, we build the resilience and problem-solving skills necessary for long-term academic success.
In Year 3, we introduce several key "Junior" expectations to foster this independence:
Independent Research: Children are taught to navigate the internet safely and use non-fiction books to find information.
Problem-Solving: Students are encouraged to solve problems for themselves, relying less on adult support for day-to-day tasks.
Self-Managed Resources: Pupils have constant access to dictionaries to check their own spellings and are expected to use classroom tools independently to support their learning.
The Prestigious Pen Licence:
A highlight of the Year 3 experience is the quest for a "Pen Licence." This is more than just a change in writing implement; it is a celebrated accolade that recognizes a student's effort and pride in their work. To earn this license, children must demonstrate consistent, joined handwriting and impeccable presentation—including the high standard of underlining dates and titles in all books.
This initiative fosters a culture of excellence, where neatness is seen as a mark of a maturing learner.
This journey of growth takes place within a classroom specifically designed to be "bright and stimulating," providing the perfect backdrop for our varied curriculum.

A Rich and Varied Curriculum
Our curriculum map is "carefully considered" to ensure that every child accesses a wide breadth of knowledge and skills. We focus on "sticky knowledge"—key facts and concepts that are revisited regularly to ensure they are retained and built upon as the children progress.
Lived Experiences
We believe that learning should extend beyond the desk. Through visitors, trips, and our "No Pens Days," we transform abstract topics into lived experiences. Strategically, these "No Pens Days" are a vital part of our Year of Oracy, where we emphasize spoken language and communication as the essential bedrock for all successful writing and collaboration.
This commitment to a rich, vocal experience is a direct reflection of our unique school ethos and community spirit.

Music | Instrumental and Theory | Weekly lessons every Friday. Dedicated recorder practice occurs during the Spring Term. |

Garsmart: Students engage with "Fruit to Suit," promoting healthy business and food choices.

Memorable Events: From the "Great Garswood Bake-Off" and "Harry Potter Book Night" to "British Monarch Day," we ensure school is a place of wonder.
Preparation and routine empower children to focus entirely on their learning and well-being. When a child arrives ready, they feel confident.
PE Days
Monday and Tuesday. Full indoor and outdoor kits must stay in school for the half-term.
Music
Lessons every Friday. Recorders are required in school during the Spring Term.
Reading
School Reading Book: Read 3x weekly at home (vital for fluency). Library Book: Changed Thursdays for shared enjoyment.
Homework
Set Friday, due Wednesday. Includes Maths WHIZZ, Spellings, and Reading Records.
Fuel
A full bottle of fresh water and a healthy fruit snack for break times.
Standards of Presentation and Uniform To maintain our professional learning environment, we ask families to adhere strictly to our safety and uniform rules:
Footwear & Accessories: Trainers and headbands are not permitted.
Safety: Hair must be tied back with a small bobble. Jewellery (including earrings) is not allowed.
Personal Care: Nail varnish is not permitted.
By following these standards, we ensure the focus remains on the daily triumphs occurring in the classroom
