Acorns and Oaks

At Garswood Primary and Nursery School, our ethos is far more than just words on a wall; it is the warm, vibrant heartbeat of our entire community. We believe that a child who feels cherished is a child who is ready to soar. Under the leadership of our Headteacher, Mrs Pamela Potter, we have engineered a "family-like" culture where every child is known by name and celebrated for their unique sparkle.

By prioritising our core values of being "Kind, Ambitious, and Respectful," we create a sun-drenched environment of emotional safety. This isn't just about good behaviour—it is the strategic foundation of learning. When a child is kind, they build the social stability that allows them to focus; when they are ambitious, they cultivate the resilience to try new things; and when they are respectful, they find their own confident voice. This transformative ethos turns a simple classroom into a sparkling community of discovery, ensuring the very first steps of the adventure in our Nursery lead naturally to a lifetime of success.

Choosing a school-based nursery is a brilliant strategic move for your child’s future. By integrating into the Garswood family from the age of two or three, children begin a seamless journey that strips away "transition anxiety" and builds a sturdy bridge straight to Reception and through to their final days as ambitious Year 6 leaders.

Our nursery is thoughtfully designed in two distinct stages, ensuring your little explorer has the exact support they need as they grow:

Our November Parent Survey tells a beautiful story of trust. One parent shared that their child asked if their teacher could "come to our house for tea!" While this is heartwarming, it is also a vital indicator of cognitive readiness. When a child feels this level of emotional safety, their brain moves out of "survival mode" and into "learning mode." Similarly, when our Oaks come home "full of stories," it proves they are thriving in an environment engineered for language development and joy.

As children grow more independent in Oaks, our cost model shifts, providing a stepping stone toward the school-age structure while maintaining our first-class care.

The Garswood Calendar can be found on the home page of our website or by clicking the link opposite to give you access to term dates, trips, annual and special events and much more.

After that click on the gallery link to witness how we recorded and celebrated these events and relive some happy Garswood memories. We also have the Garswood on Video page for some more active memories such as assemblies and events that have occured over the years.

If all that isn't enough, we also have our @Garswoodprimaryschool Instagram page, full of our latest adventures and special events.

We will not upload any images of your child without your permission. When your child starts their Garswood journey all parents and guardians are asked for signed permission for the various platforms and this permission can be withdrawn at any time.

Our Garswood Curriculum

At Garswood, we recognise that "playing and exploring" are not just fun—they are the vital Characteristics of Effective Learning. Following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, we ensure that every giggle and every game is a building block for future academic mastery.

Our curriculum balances adult-led structure with child-initiated discovery across these key areas:

  • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development: Building self-worth and positive relationships. This empowers children with the "soft skills" required for lifelong collaboration.

  • Communication and Language: Extending vocabulary through storytelling and role-play. Confident expression is the primary tool for accessing every other subject.

  • Physical Development: Sharpening fine and gross motor skills. Activities like "Funky Fingers" and our famous "Dough Gym" (where we squeeze and roll playdough to music!) are the essential precursors to holding a pencil and writing with ease.

  • Literacy: Igniting a love for fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Early mark-making and oral sounding-out are the first exciting steps toward becoming a lifelong reader.

  • Mathematics: Exploring numbers, patterns, and space. We help children identify patterns to make sense of the physical world around them.

  • Understanding the World: Investigating the environment and technology. It cultivates a sense of wonder about our local community and the wider world.

  • Expressive Arts and Design: Playing with music, drama, and diverse media. This encourages the original, creative thinking required for future problem-solving.

Outdoor Explorers and Nature Seekers

Learning at Garswood has no walls! Our outdoor environment is a rich, well-resourced wonderland where children experience the world in all weathers. Whether it’s feeling the wind in their hair or catching raindrops on their noses, we believe "all-weather play" is essential for building resilient, curious minds.

When we encourage our explorers to roll down hills or navigate a mud pit, we are actually engineering critical thinking and problem-solving milestones. These activities require children to calculate risk, navigate social cooperation, and understand the properties of materials—skills that form the bedrock of scientific reasoning.

Our nature-based provision includes:

  • The Texture Kitchen: A sensory playground for imaginative culinary "creations."

  • The Mud Pit: A space for messy, magnificent digging and construction.

  • The Bug Hotel: An area to observe tiny miracles and begin scientific inquiry.

Flexibility and Logistics

We know that modern life is a balancing act, which is why Garswood is a dedicated partner to our working families. We offer a robust wrap-around care system from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.

  • Funding and Support: We offer 15 and 30-hour funded places for eligible working families. We proudly support the St Helens Council "Passport for 2s" scheme and recommend the "Best Start in Life" parent-hub for trusted development and financial guidance.

  • Session Options: Choose from a Core Day (8:45 am – 3:15 pm), an Extended Day (7:30 am – 5:30 pm), or specific AM/PM sessions. Breakfast and Afterschool Clubs are also available for maximum flexibility.

  • Nutrition: Healthy snacks are provided for 60p per day. For lunch, children can enjoy a hot meal prepared by our trained cook for £3.72, or bring a healthy packed lunch.

  • The SeeSaw Learning Platform: We bridge the gap between school and home with the SeeSaw app. You’ll receive real-time updates and photos of your child’s "daily stories," ensuring you never miss a milestone and can celebrate every achievement as it happens.
