Year 2 World Of Glass Trip

Lesson: History

Class: Year 2 Year: 2021 - 2022

Today Year 2 stepped into St Helens past and relived life in the town during the last two centuries. The children observed images and real-life artefacts in the Pilkington’s Gallery collection to compare St Helen’s past to the present day. The children learned about social and domestic changes, jobs and industry. They really got a sense of what life would have been like in a Victorian town.

The children experienced an amazing interactive film which explains why people can’t really live without glass. Followed by a glass bowling demonstration by a glass making expert - it really blew them away! This linked with Y2’s materials topic in science. The children were inspired that they come from a town that revolutionised how the world makes glass today.

The children also enjoyed exploring the underground tunnels of one of the world’s first continuous regenerative tank glass making furnace. It was built in 1887 by William Windle Pilkington.

They even came away with a gift from the Glass Blowing expert as a little token from the day. The glass dish is proudly on display in Year 2’s classroom.
