Star Performers

Monday 22nd May 2017 droves of people from our community and dignitaries from across the town and beyond arrived at our school - many of them in response to the superb letters they had received from our Year 5 children. Over 150 adults packed out our school hall in anticipation of the Year 5 performance.

Over recent weeks Year 5 have researched and written all about The Real Junk Food Project. They have visited Ann Fairhurst and her Fur Clemt Cafe in Wigan and set up their own #payasyoufeel stall outside the school. Food, felt unsuitable for sale by supermarkets and stores is intercepted and this perfectly good stock is then used by Ann and the many other cafes across the UK, and of course, is made available on the Garswood School Fur Clemt pop up stall.

Year 5 children passionately relayed their messages and were clear about the impact of food waste on landfill. With their opening number 'Food, Glorious, Food' - they went on to highlight the paradox of ever increasing food waste with increasing food poverty and rising numbers of people accessing food banks.

The standard of a West End performance the children amazed the audience. Feedback was superb. We were delighted that Adam Smith, the Founder of The Real Junk Food Project was able to come along and was so complimentary about the children's delivery of this important issue. He later tweeted, "What an honour to be part of such an inspiring and empowering school, 'Let's REALLY feed the world'".Conor McGinn MP who commented on the happiness and amazing atmosphere in the school was also bowled over by the performance.

Our children hope to continue to spread the word far and wide and having hosted, in our audience, school councils from our network of schools, we hope that other communities will soon begin to benefit from these initiatives.

Well done Year 5 - we are so proud of you all!
